Learning Powers

"Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow." ~ Anthony J. D'Angelo

At Meadows, we are committed to ensuring our pedagogy is research-based.

Metacognition refers to "thinking about thinking" or “learning about learning”; being aware of one's own thought processes. At Meadows, this involves teaching children to plan, monitor, and evaluate their learning strategies. This helps them become more independent and effective learners!

By integrating metacognitive strategies into our curriculum, we can help children become more self-aware, independent, and effective learners, preparing them for future academic and personal success.

At Meadows, we translate metacognitive skills into child-friendly 'Learning Powers'. We teach, model and rehearse these Learning Powers throughout our curriculum opportunities.

Learning Powers

When our Reception children are ready, we begin to enhance their continuous provision in the Early Years by introducing, noticing and celebrating the following five learning powers:

  • Listening
  • Focus
  • Communication
  • Questioning
  • Resilience

Mastering these Learning Powers supports their transition to Year One.
