What is the intent of French at Meadows?
At Meadows, we aspire to foster curiosity and give our children a deeper knowledge of the world around them. Learning a language develops our children’s communication skills and gives us the opportunity to explore and interact with the increasingly diverse community that we live in. We aim to expose children to high quality, enjoyable teaching and resources through the use of the Primary Languages Network. By using this exciting resource, Key Stage 2 pupils can learn about, and revisit, helpful communication topics such as animals, food, the weather, common greetings, school and everyday life. We aim to ensure children are well prepared for the transition to the secondary school languages curriculum and can truly flourish in a language of their choice. By learning a language, the opportunities available to our children are widely expanded, not only to communicate with others but also provide the first steps to what could be exciting career and travel opportunities in the future.
How is French implemented at Meadows?
French is the current language taught at Meadows, using the Primary Languages Network and the National Curriculum Programme of Study. Through a knowledge rich curriculum, students will acquire the skills needed to develop the four main skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Children have the opportunity to practice all four skills every lesson in an engaging and memorable way. Each topic, children will apply the knowledge they are taught to each of these skills, having the opportunity to revisit each topic every year. Topics change on a half-termly basis. Children will not only learn the language but become immersed in the culture and traditions of France.

How does French progress at Meadows?
Children in Year Three begin their journey with French on Stage 1, before progressing to Stage 2 in Year 4, Stage 3 in Year 5 and Stage 4 in Year 6. Teachers use the Long- and Medium-Term plans available from the Primary Languages Network to structure lessons and content; this then ensures that teaching and learning is in line with the National Curriculum. Each Stage builds on the knowledge gained in the previous stage, exposing children to ever more complex words and phrases as they progress.
