School Council
Children have the right to say what they think should happen, when adults are making decisions that affect them, and to have their opinions taken into account.
The Convention on the Rights of the Child, Article 12
At Meadows we are incredibly proud to have pupil representatives that take part in regular School Council meetings and represent the views of all of our children. The School Council works to make improvements to the school and they are in place so that pupils have a voice and are involved in decisions about the school that affect them.
Through class council meetings, all pupils have the opportunity to raise issues, share ideas and take part in discussions that involve all of their classmates. In order to reach a democratic solution, wider issues that arise, are then discussed further in committee meetings with representatives from different classes.
At Meadows Primary School and Nursery
our School Council have a clear mission:
‘Working on behalf of our Meadows friends
to improve our school and community.’
Our School Councillors
Who are our School Councillors?
Democratically elected, children in Years 2 to 6 vote for two new representatives per class at the start of the school year.
A good representative will speak at the council meetings about things that their class is interested in or concerned by. They listen carefully to their peers and think about what will make Meadows magnificent. They will also tell their class about what is going on in the council meetings by discussing the agenda and sharing the minutes.
What impact does the school council have?
Our school council does a number of things which bring positive impact to our school:
- The School Council meets to discuss and sort out issues. These may include pupil concerns, school lunches, behaviour or ideas for fundraising events. Adults listen to these concerns and ensure they are shared with the correct adults and actions put in place to make things better.
- Members of the school council are responsible for carrying out the ideas that have been agreed, such as planning discos, fundraising etc.
- School Councillors are called upon to assist in the implementation of school improvements e.g. new playground equipment will be agreed by the School Council and its install monitored by them.
